Where in the World?

July 31, 2018

Full disclosure:  I missed the Lansdowne Farmers Market last Saturday, although I did hear that Kids’ Day was a great success…and something about stacking fruit boxes that I hope someone caught on video. Good times.

Anyway…I was in the Endless Mountains of PA.  If you’re familiar, you know that there’s a large Polish community up there.  And a local roadhouse/bar (shout out to Chet’s!) with cabbage and noodles on the menu.  Haluski.  And whatever the Polish word is for delicious and for hitting a spot I didn’t know needed filling.

Maybe it was the caraway seeds that got me to thinking…or possibly the bacon and butter.

But here in the US, with our proud immigrant history, we’ve assimilated so many different foods and flavors…some of it so everyday that we’ve forgotten who to thank.

Among our own LFM vendors, we can enjoy some of the very best flavor variety:  Asian dumplings (Rebecca’s), African rice bowls (Mama Rie’s), tacos y tamales (Taste of Pueblo). And let’s not forget that Cheryl’s Southern soul takes its cue from the Caribbean and beyond.  Add in breads and scones and puddings and …well, just about everything we love to love came here from somewhere else.  Except popcorn.  That started here…just ask Maureen at MoJo’s.

And here’s the best news…most of these places will be representin’ this week at LFM!*

PLUS…for all you survivalists out there…straight from South America: (nerd alert) beef jerky!  Lucky for you, you can discuss and stock up this week with Jerky Jack!

But man doesn’t live by bread or barbecue alone…no sir.  How ‘bout some music? Already this year we’ve had bossa nova and Spanish guitar.  This week, one of my absolutely can’t-sit- still favorites: our own Joe Todaro and company will make their way across the parking lot to bring us Sycamore Muse and their Italian mandolin music.  Get ready to tarentella!

Later this season, a little French-Canadian flavor with some Cajun zydeco.  More toe-tapping. Wear comfy shoes!

All of which brings me to my point (you knew I had one).  Diversity isn’t just about looks…diversity is us…and everything that we bring to the table…our food, our music, our style!  And here in Lansdowne we show it off every Saturday.

In the Music Tent:  the aforementioned Sycamore Muse.

Artist of the week:  McTyldsBeads…Mary believes that imperfections are what makes her beads…and maybe us?…perfectly beautiful.  Stop by and see what she means.

*As always, for the complete list of vendors, musicians and artists each week, visit the LFM website or FB page.  And don’t forget to read this entire newsletter for upcoming events that you won’t want to miss.

Penn Wood Proud. There’s still time (’til Aug 12) to catch the amazing Penn Wood Class of 2018 art exhibit Through the Looking Glass at the 20*20 House Gallery.

Community Cupboard:  Don’t forget to remember those less fortunate than you.  Giving is the best seasoning.

See you Saturday
