Here’s lookin’ at you, Kids

July 25, 2018

This is a special, once-in-a-season LFM, where kids rule…and we’ll be ready for them.

More on that a little later, but first some Market notes for the adults who think they are in charge.

I have it on good authority that the awaited freestone peaches are about a week away.  But the early clingstones and the nectarines have arrived!  Also sweet sugarplums, black- and blueberries, and those seedless sugar-baby watermelons that actually fit in the fridge.  Thank you, Science!

On the veggie side, you’ll find cucumbers in just-right sizes for slicing or pickling, and some cute little patty-pan squashes that Judy at Herrcastle Farms swears are good to throw on the grill just as they are.  Also and always: the ubiquitous green and yellow summer squash (cue the zucchini bread…more on that later in the season).  Add in corn, beets, onions, green beans, eggplants, peppers, carrots…whew….somebody stop me! Let’s just say a plethora of produce, and leave the decision-making up to you.  Prepare to be dazzled.

Now back to Kid Day

When I was a kid:

  • popsicles were 5 cents, and you got one by walking around the corner to the drugstore (grape was my favorite);

  • ice cream came in something called Breyer’s Dixie Cups, with a wooden spoon and a picture of Roy Rogers or Dale Evans inside the lid;

  • our swimming pool was a galvanized tub, a lawn sprinkler, or a thunder-free rainstorm;

  • summer sleepovers were two sheets over the clothesline, and a sleeping bag that smelled of mothballs.

Yeah, I’m that old.  Most reading this (you are reading this, right?) won’t go back quite that far.

But one thing never changed.  The siren song (get it? Siren song?) of FIRE ENGINES!  We loved ‘em. And on a calm, no-fire summer day, we could hang by the local firehouse and maybe get invited in to climb aboard, and visit with the resident dalmatian.  Good times.

Now back to the future…courtesy of our own local Fire Department, our 2018 batch of munchkins can clamber aboard the big red truck, just like I did.  ‘Though I can’t promise a dalmatian.

Our police force and the Lansdowne Library will be on hand as well, with things to do and see and learn.  Thanks to all who serve this little town so well.

There will be contests, hula hoops, hopscotch, corn hole, and more. So bring your favorite little people for some old-fashioned fun and games, a chance for the 12-and-unders to score some serious swag from venders (maybe they’ll share), and even learn a thing or two (but they don’t need to know that).  With a stop at the manager’s tent, they can even rock some temporary “ink.”

In the Music tent: Big fun with Joy’s Band Camp.  A local bon vivant… Joy Theissen .

If you don’t know her by name, you’ll recognize the face…it’s one you see at just about every fun event here in Lansdowne.

BTW: An apology is in order to guitarist Russell Ferrara (last week’s Grey Dog Down) who, it should be noted, is also a long-time resident of Lansdowne.  Which is no surprise, since we seem to attract the very best and brightest. Happy to know you, Russ.

Artist of the Week:  With a special nod to Kid Day, for the first time, LFM is featuring not one…not two…but count ‘em, three! student artists:  Recent Penn Wood grads, Vickiana Dulcio and Eshé Henry will be offering illustrations, original paintings, and other pieces; and rising 5th grader,10-year-old Orla, will show her artisan (handmade) potholders and cunning puppy notebooks.

As always, you can click here or here to see the schedule for all of the vendors for the week.  But take a minute now to browse the rest of this newsletter for events in the weeks ahead.

Last note:  Be sure to get yourself over to the 20*20 House to view the PennWood Class of 2018 Exhibit:  Through the Looking Glass.  Seriously first-rate works of eighteen graduating seniors.  You will be blown away; and that’s a promise I can keep.

See you at the LFM!
